Money, Speed Bumps, and Opportunity: Guiding Students with Foster Care Experience onto Postsecondary Journeys
This practical seminar will help Pennsylvania counselors, social workers, and child welfare professionals support youth in foster care as they transition to postsecondary education. Using real-life scenarios, we will review key financial entitlements—like the PA Fostering Independence Tuition Waiver, Chafee education and training grants, and funding for shorter term training —alongside common challenges, including year-round housing, academic retention, and financial aid navigation. Attendees will leave with clear, actionable steps to help students secure funding and begin their postsecondary journey on a solid foundation. For people who are newly working with older youth in care, this presentation will be especially helpful.
This event is being offered by PHEAA, the Philadelphia Education Fund, I-LEAD, and The University of Pennsylvania’s Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice & Research in collaboration with the Philadelphia School District and the Philadelphia College Prep Roundtable.
